of Americans say they do not have much knowledge about plastic alternatives

The U.S. is one of the leading generators of plastic waste. However, concerns over plastic pollution, as well as eco-friendly alternatives, are also peaking. Piplsay (powered by Market Cube) polled 31,149 Americans to find out more about their understanding of plastics. Political parties, brands, as well as retailers, can leverage this data in their decision making. For an in-depth analysis, download the full document here.

In our previous report on plastic usage, we explored America’s attitudes towards the plastic waste problem and what is being done about it. In our second series, we try to understand how aware Americans are of plastic pollution and alternatives. Piplsay surveyed 31,149 Americans nationwide, and here’s what we found.

For about 7 out of 10 Americans, plastic bags and bottles are the biggest contributors to plastic pollution. Cigarettes, surprisingly, figure at the bottom of the list, despite the fact that cigarette butts are the most common type of plastic litter found in oceans.

Knowing Your Plastic Well

Only 28% of Americans prefer recyclable plastics. A huge majority, however, favor biodegradable plastics because they decompose faster. Moreover, Americans are not just blindly following trends. A good 40% have a good understanding of plastic alternatives, including even their challenges.

Still, about three in 10 Americans believe that plastic can be recycled indefinitely. In reality, however, most plastics can only be recycled a few times. Similarly, a whopping 55% of people believe that America recycles a significant portion of its plastic waste. Only 19% of Americans are somewhere closer to the actual figure, which is just about 9%.

Survey Methodology: This Piplsay survey (powered by Market Cube) was conducted nationwide in the US in the month of December 2019. We received 31,149 responses from individuals aged 18 years and older
